I've seen several shaving discussion boards where people have kept shaving soap for years and it works just as good as it did the day they bought it. My experience is very similar.
If you leave a shaving soap exposed it will dry out and some water will remedy that situation. Leaving it closed up tucked away in a cool dark and dry place will give you the longest life from your soap.
There is not really such a thing as going bad. Your soap will lose scent over time and might need more water to activate it. Other than that soaps can be kept as long as you can whip up a good lather from them.

I absolutely loved the article, and completely agree (Which is something i RARELY do), soaps don’t just go bad easily… I have had shrinking experiences, with, Cella, Proraso Red, because i left the lid off, to let them air dry, but i didn’t just do it for a few hours, we’re talking weeks here, and that makes them crack, like Mitchell’s Wool Fat, tends to break easily, but the lather and scent, is still as perfect as when you opened it the first time :)
